May 30, 2014
Animals, Derbyshire, History, Lambs, Peak District, Tissington, Well Dressings,It's amazing how quickly the seasons change and another year flies by, but the ancient tradition of well dressing is ever constant. The Peak District hosts many well dressings, but Tissington village produces some of the most spectacular, with a total of 6 wells. Hall Well commemorating the First World War It is unclear as to the exact origin of well dressings - some believe they were originally pagan celebrations, others consider they only go back as far as the Black Death in the 1348. Many communities were devastated by the dreadful plague, ...
Happy Birthday!
May 16, 2014
Accessible Holidays, Animals, Derbyshire, Family, Group Holidays, History, self catering holiday,Today one of our holiday guests, Eva Tucker, celebrated her 101st birthday whilst staying with us in Pinder cabin. Yes you read it correctly, an amazing 101! A charming and still quick witted woman, Eva was born in Stockwell in 1913 and has lived through 2 World Wars. It's incredible to think that when she was born over a century ago horse drawn carriages were the general mode of transport and The Model T Ford was just 5 years old; now we are just a few years away from driverless cars! The telephone had only recently been invented by Alexande...
Painted Tales
July 9, 2013
Animals, Derbyshire, Farm, General, History, Hunt, Peak District, watercolour painting,This week we attended the preview of an inspiring art exhibition of "Painted Tales" by our great friend Sue Prince. Inspired by a visit to Unnaryd in 2004, Sue st...

This week we ventured underground into one of the richest and deepest copper mines. Ecton in the Manifold Valley has been mined probably for much of the last 3500 years, but became famous as one of the highest grade and productive copper mines in the World during the 18th century under the ownership of the Chatsworth Estate. It is said that the fifth Duke of Devonshire made such a huge pro...
Shrovetide Football Action
February 13, 2013
Ashbourne shrovetide, Derbyshire, Family, History, Peak District, Snow, Tourism,Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide Football is a quirky tradition - basically a manic game of football played through the streets of Ashbourne on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, which goes on all afternoon and evening from turning up the painted leather ball at 2 pm until well after dark. Shrovetide football in Ashbourne was first recorded as long ago as 1682, and hasn't changed much over the centuries, except that it is now watched by hoards of people from all over the UK, not just the locals. Two teams, Up'ards, born North of the River Henmore, ...
