Our journey to Net Zero - and beyond!
Our Net Zero target
We're lucky to live and work in a beautiful part of the Peak District. So it's only right we do everything we can to protect it. At Hoe Grange Holidays, we’re working hard to reach Net Zero by 2030, and thanks to some big changes (and a lot of small ones), we’re well on our way.
If you’re looking for a countryside escape that puts the planet first - without compromising on comfort - you're in the right place.
Book your sustainable farm stay today and be part of the change.
A big drop in our carbon footprint
From 23 tonnes in 2021 to just 4.75 tonnes in 2024, we’ve cut our carbon emissions by 77%. This isn’t just a headline - it’s the result of serious investment and long-term commitment to doing things better.
Our carbon emissions year by year:
- 2021: 23 tonnes
- 2022: 11 tonnes
- 2024: 4.75 tonnes
We’re proud of the progress. But we’re not done yet!
How did we get this far?
Renewable energy powering your stay
We’ve installed:
- 33kW of solar panels, including a clever sun-tracking system that produces 40% more than static roof-mounted panels
- A 10kW wind turbine
- A brand-new 96kW battery storage system to keep things running on cloudy or still days
These feed power to:
- Our ground and air-source heat pumps
- High-tech infrared heating panels in our glamping pods
- EV chargers for guests
- And even our 100% electric business vehicle
It means your cabin, pod or caravan is warm and welcoming, without the carbon cost.
Energy efficiency that goes beyond the basics
We’ve gone further than just switching bulbs and adding insulation. Our glamping pods and cabins are so energy efficient that they’ve achieved A+ EPC ratings, with standout scores of -23 for the pods and -4 for the cabins. (Yes - negative scores are a good thing here!)
Farm holidays with planet-friendly thinking
We're farmers, which means we think long-term. Sustainability is woven into everyday life here.
That includes:
- A paperless office and refillable eco cleaning products
- A Zero to Landfill waste company
- Supporting local, sustainable businesses, including:
- Fresh milk from the local dairy
- Handmade Derbyshire soaps
- Locally blended teas and coffees
- Cold-pressed rapeseed oil and seasonal jams
- Supporting local community projects and events to invest in the local area
- Running the farm using conservation grazing to protect biodiversity
We’re not perfect, but we’re always learning, improving, and investing in what matters.
What do we have planned to meet our NetZero 2030 goal?
We’ve already made huge strides - but we’re not stopping here. To reach Net Zero by 2030, we’ve got more in the pipeline:
- Improving our renewables monitoring to help us plan when to use more energy without drawing from the grid
- Continuing to replace equipment and appliances with the latest energy-efficient models as they read end-of-life
- Expanding our support for local suppliers and zero-waste packaging
- Planting more trees to support wildlife and help with natural carbon offsetting
What’s after NetZero – becoming a Climate Positive business
Getting to Net Zero is a big milestone, but for us, it’s not the end goal. Once we’ve balanced out what we emit, we want to go a step further.
Our aim is to become a climate positive business, which means removing more carbon from the atmosphere than we produce.
Why? Because we believe that countryside businesses like ours can be part of the solution. We’ve seen first-hand how much nature gives us: the fresh air, the wild views, the peaceful mornings. Becoming climate positive is one way we can give something back.
How we plan to get there:
- Growing our own offsetting through tree planting and habitat creation
- Sharing knowledge with other businesses to inspire wider change
- Continuing to put people and planet at the heart of every decision
Why it matters (and why it’s worth it)
