David and Felicity Brown set up Hoe Grange Holidays Limited in 2006 as a diversification development to provide additional income to support the family dairy farm. Two self-catering log cabins were designed with access in mind, one with a fully accessible wet room. The log cabins were all rated under the National Accessible Scheme.
Hoe Grange also targeted a second niche market. From the start, guests could bring their horse on holiday to ride local trails and the farm fields. There are 6 spacious stables and plenty of grazing paddocks.
Bring your own horse holidays continue to be popular with over 50 horses staying each year, enjoying the many off-road riding routes.
With little accessible holiday accommodation on offer in the area, the business became successful and a range of additional disabled equipment was added following feedback from guests. Two more log cabins were built in 2010, both with greater levels of accessibility.
Hoe Grange’s primary market is accessible tourism, with over 70% of guests having at least one person in their party who has a disability. However, the customer base is broad, from families with young children to friends and family reunions to horse riders.
In 2012, Hoe Grange became the first UK holiday accommodation provider to offer a Boma 7 off-road wheelchair for hire. This enabled guests to explore the countryside alongside family and friends. Guests often comment that it has given them a real sense of freedom and the smiles on their faces say it all.
In 2016, Hoe Grange expanded, adding two high-end glamping pods with ensuite facilities to attract couples looking for a romantic break, walkers and cyclists.
In 2018, glamping was diversified with the purchase of two vintage bow-top gypsy caravans. One was installed in July 2018 and booked every weekend until end October. The second is awaiting renovation. A secure cycle shelter was also installed.
In 2023, Felicity and David's daughter Caroline joined the family business as General Manager.
Both the beef and sheep farm and the holiday business are run on a sustainable basis and have been awarded the Peak District Environmental Quality Mark. Hoe Grange Holidays is a Green Tourism Gold Award holder.
The business has won many major national awards for its excellence in both accessibility and sustainability. Customer satisfaction is high, and many guests return year on year to enjoy the peaceful relaxing atmosphere, superb facilities and enjoyable extras available. Hoe Grange Holidays is highly rated on TripAdvisor with a Certificate of Excellence and A Hall of Fame Award for nearly a decade.
