Our resident artist Roger Allen has won a Derbyshire County Council Award for his watercolour and pencil drawing at The Derbyshire Open arts competition. The award winning painting is incredibly detailed, but may not be to everyone's taste as it depicts some grim images of rotting sheep. I hasten to add that our flock are all live and well and were not models for this painting! Our resident watercolour artist, Roger Allen, has recently been on a trip to Snowdonia, where he battled through wind and rain to collect material for a series of four fantastic paintings of the dramatic landscape. 'Y Lliwedd, Snowdonia’ (see right) was selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2013 and ‘Afon Glaslyn, Snowdon in cloud’ was chosen for the 2012 Sunday Times Watercolour Competition. Sue's exhibition showcases her fabulous and distinctive 'bonader' Swedish style folk art, painted with homemade egg tempera on linen or canvas. The word "Bonader" means decorative wall hanging and these traditional paintings were common in rural southern Sweden in the late 1700's to brighten up the dark, smoky interiors of the small farmhouses around Christmas and winter festivals.
