This week we attended the preview of an inspiring art exhibition of "Painted Tales" by our great friend Sue Prince. Sue's exhibition showcases her fabulous and distinctive 'bonader' Swedish style folk art, painted with homemade egg tempera on linen or canvas. The word "Bonader" means decorative wall hanging and these traditional paintings were common in rural southern Sweden in the late 1700's to brighten up the dark, smoky interiors of the small farmhouses around Christmas and winter festivals. Inspired by a visit to Unnaryd in 2004, Sue st...

Our Artist in residence Roger Allen has scooped a top prize in the Derbyshire Open Art Exhibition, in the Watercolour category. His painting entitled "Marrowman" is a rather grim looking self portrait, not his most attractive piece ever, but as a technical achievement  it is outstanding. Why is it that prize winning pictures have to be so grim? You may remember this painting is a follow up to "Boy with the broken arm" which depicted a glum looking Elliot with his arm in a sling, in front of a Derbyshire winter landscape with a dead sheep in the background. Extremely art...

If you remember the first painting “The boy with the broken arm”, featured Elliot standing in front of a small copse in winter, looking rather dejected with his arm in a sling. There are patches of snow on the ground and a dead sheep in the background, complete with circling crows! The new painting “Six months later” is a complete contrast, with a cheerful Elliot stood in fro...

Fabulous news about our resident artist Roger Allen, he has had his watercolour painting "Boy with a broken arm" accepted for the Royal Watercolour Society Open Competition. The painting is on display at the Bankside Gallery in London from now until 10th March 2011. Boy with a broken arm Roger's inspiration for this picture came from the formation of the background trees, which have already appeared in several of his other paintings. The trees are on our farm fields here at Hoe Grange in the stunning Peak District and the boy is our youngest ...
