Our resident watercolour artist Roger Allen recently opened his one man exhibition in Buxton at the Museum and Art Gallery. We attended the preview on March 6th and we were pleasantly surprised by the number of his paintings that showed our dairy herd that was sold last summer. It bought a bit of a lump to the throat to see the cows that we knew so well. One of the largest pictures named 'The collecting yard' showed the cows feeding in the yard waiting to be milked. We both thought that it would be nice to have that painting but unfortunately ...
Can you imagine leaping into an icy river on a cold winter's day? It seems strange but that is exactly what a hardcore of young men in Ashbourne have been doing today! If only I could get my hands on the Ball! There are many strange traditions in the Peak District and Derbyshire, but perhaps one of the most unusual is the Royal Shrovetide Football played through the streets of Ashbourne on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. The game was first recorded as long ago as 1682; by 1928 it had become so respectable that the then Prince of Wales wa...

Animals, Chatsworth, Films, General, History, Peak District, Tourism,Star quality! The location for filming was Chatsworth House, just 14 miles away, not that you will recognise this magniciant building as it ...
David and I attended the Visit Peak District and Derbyshire Tourism Conference yesterday held at Buxton. It was an inspirational afternoon and a great opportunity to catch up with other accommodation providers in the area. Simon Calder the travel journalist (who cycled over the hills from Macclesfield on his fold up bike - now that's dedication!) gave us an amusing and timely reminder of what a fantastic place the Peak District is and the amazing things we have right here on our doorstep. Of course this is nothing new! This spectacular area...
The Peak District is steeped in history and as I found out the other evening some of the tales concern ghostly goings on! It was a beautiful sunny evening as we arrived in the quaint market town of Bakewell for a ghost walk led by local historian Nicky Crewe. Although I have visited Bakewell many times, as it is one of the largest local farmer's markets where we often send our animals , I discovered back street alleyways and courtyards that I was totally unware of, and of course what made it all the more fascinating was the many ghost...
