We are delighted to announce that our fellow Farm Stay UK members raised a grand total of £650 at their recent AGM for Pumping Marvellous The Heart Failure Charity.
Personally this charity is very close to our hearts. Our youngest son, Elliot, at the age of just 18 years old, was suddenly and unexpectedly taken extremely ill with heart failure. It was a real shock as there was no previous medical concerns and no family history of heart failure.
This patient-led Heart Failure Charity was an invaluable support to both our son, and us as parents, at a time when we most needed help.
We are Farm Stay UK members, and it is wonderful that our fellow farm holiday accommodation owners want to support this amazing charity.
Farm Stay is is a “Not-For-Profit” co-operative marketing farm and country accommodation, where you can book direct with us, the owners.
Looking for a holiday? Do you want to escape to the country?
On the Farm Stay UK website you will find all sorts of quality country based accommodation, from traditional farmhouse B&B's, cosy self-catering cottages and barns, to gorgeous glamping and cool camping. There's something for everyone and with us it's personal, so you will always find a warm welcome!
The Pumping Marvellous charity was set up by heart failure patients. They realised the need for people living with heart conditions to talk freely and share experiences in a safe environment, with others that truly understand what they are going through.
Elliot was in a coronary ward, wired up to a heart monitor 24/7, for over 8 weeks. The average age of patients was over 65 years old, so you can imagine how isolated he felt. As a teenager he didn’t always want to talk to us, his parents, about his anxieties. The Pumping Marvellous Facebook group became an important means of connecting with other young people in the same situation. It allowed him to allay his fears and talk about his feelings, as well as finding out about various treatments.
The charity offers helpful information and guides you through the maze of ever-confusing medical terms, at a crucial time when you are not necessarily thinking straight. The friendly support and consistent encouragement from others in a similar situation helps new patients improve self-management, which can enhance quality of life and lead to better outcomes.
It’s as much about the psychological impact, as it is about the physical day to day trials and restrictions of living with heart failure. The Pumping Marvellous community have such a positive attitude to helping others that can make a real difference to mental and physical wellbeing.
There is also a wealth of online patient materials, including heart failure toolkits, which have all been developed by patients for patients, in an easy to understand format. We found such resources very helpful.
David and I were overwhelmed by the support from our fellow FarmStay members and were delighted to hand over the £650 raised. Knowing the good work that Pumping Marvellous do we are sure the money will be put to excellent use to support and help others.
We are delighted to report that our son Elliot's condition is currently stable. Whilst he takes a vast number of drugs four times a day, and the future is unpredictable, he leads a comparatively normal life. He is thoroughly enjoying university life at Manchester, studying aeronautical engineering, or rocket science to you and me!
Long may it continue!!
Felicity and David
