Animals, Birds, Derbyshire, Eco, Farm, Hunt, Lambs, Peak District, Wildlife,Rodent control can be a challenge on a farm. Keeping down the rabbit population to a healthy level is always a challenge, but at Hoe Grange we have an unusual solution to the problem. Stuart has been flying his birds of prey here for years, today he brought his female Goshawk and Stuart's friend brought along a male. Falconry is a very technical operation as the birds will only hunt when they are the correct weight; a few ounces over and they will go to roost, a little under and they don't have the strength to fly. The Birtish Falconers Cl...
All of Elliot's sheep have now lambed; Tia and Maria had two lambs each, whilst Coco and Channel had just one strong larger lamb each. All are doing well and growing fast with the help of their mums nutritious milk. Check out the video as the latest lamb manages to find its feet and takes its first faltering steps - amazing when you consider it is only 10 minutes old! When a sheep is giving birth and the legs are visible, the little lambs tend to be born within the next 30 to 45 minutes. Once the first lamb is born, the following lambs a...

Animals, Cows, Derbyshire, Family, Farm, Lambs, Peak District, Snow, Tourism,Spring is definitely in the air in the Derbyshire Peak District, despite the sudden return of harsh winter weather on Wednesday when we woke up to over a foot of snow, with drifts blocking the road. The sun is now shining again, which is just as well, as we have had a flurry of new arrivals over the last 3 days. 7 of the cows have had their calves, but most excitingly Elliot's sheep have had their first lambs. Guests who have stayed at Hoe Grange over the last 2 years have more than likely seen if not met our sons small flock of sheep, Tia, ...
Oreo our Belted Galloway cow, has had a beautiful bull calf. Oreo has the characteristic white belt around her middle which gives the name to this native breed, but isn't a certified pedigree as she has a large black round spot on one side of her white flank. However her new baby has excellent markings with a proper full white belt - he is very handsome, shame he's not a heifer! Baby Beltie Meanwhile Shepherd Elliot has been tending to his older sheep, Tia and Maria and Coco and Chanel, giving them an injection of copper in preparation fo...
We have had several new arrivals at Hoe Grange Farm this week. Tagging our new calf Firstly an Aberdeen Angus heifer (female) calf was born and even at 6 hours old it took two of us to catch her to tag her ears. It never ceases to amaze me how agile and active calves can be; at less than 12 hours old the calf raced around the entire 4 acre field at high speed, and guests who have stayed in our log cabins will know how steep the hill is! Eventually we managed to corner her at the top of the field inbetween the wall and a fallen tree. Secondly...
