Derbyshire has been particularly hard hit with the recent bad weather. The large overnight snowfall of last Friday has been made worse by the terrific winds which have sculpted the snow into huge drifts which have blocked roads and made feeding and looking after the farm animals a trial. It is quite bizarre as the middle of the fields are slightly green with tufts of grass poking through the thin white blanket, yet the wall sides are piled high with snow that will take some shifting when the sun finally reappears. Snow drifts piled high Dail...

Accessible Holidays, Animals, Cows, Derbyshire, Farm, Food and drink, Peak District, self catering holiday, Tourism,Following our recent clear TB test we have now started to sell some of the beef animals. The first to go were some of our Belted Galloways who are about 18 months old. Having never sold any of this breed before I was a little unsure of the price to expect at market. The recent horse meat scandal has made a positive impact on the live trade in beef animals as more and more people realise what we have known for years - that local British beef is the best and the more local the better. In the Peak District many of the independent high street butc...
Today was a nervous day for me and my cows - it was time for the dreaded TB test. Tuberculosis is a major problem here in the Derbyshire hills and as a result we have to test all the cows and calves on the farm for TB every 12 months. It is quite a tough and sometime dangerous task as our suckler beef cattle are free range and not so used to being handled as dairy cows who are milked every day! Our beef cattle tucking into their grub after their TB test Each animal is given 2 small injections in the skin on their neck and 3 days later the vet...
The one thing about farming is that everyday is different and you have to turn your hand to many unusual tasks - today was one of those days! Hens can fly, but are not know for their aerobatic skills, and maximum flight time is a matter of seconds. Today one of our little flock showed just what a mess you can get in if you haven't worked out your landing strip - you should always look before you leap! It was a lovely sunny morning here in the Derbyshire hills, so one of the free range hens decided to stretch her wings. Our black Leghorn, Blac...
Christmas is coming…

Animals, Christmas, Farm, Food and drink, General, Peak District, Pigs, self catering holiday,Can you believe it's only 27 sleeps until the big day? Christmas is coming and our 4 lovely Gloucester Old Spot pigs are nearly ready to go. They are such characters and have had tremendous fun out in the paddock - what was a lush green area is now a sea of mud and they love to dig and root around plastering their snouts in dirt and soil - they look a right muddy mess when they come in for the night! Christmas is a time for sharing with family and friends and what better way to celebrate than with a truly local British turkey? How do you know...
