Accessible Holidays, Animals, Cows, Derbyshire, Farm, Food and drink, Peak District, self catering holiday, Tourism,Following our recent clear TB test we have now started to sell some of the beef animals. The first to go were some of our Belted Galloways who are about 18 months old. Having never sold any of this breed before I was a little unsure of the price to expect at market. The recent horse meat scandal has made a positive impact on the live trade in beef animals as more and more people realise what we have known for years - that local British beef is the best and the more local the better. In the Peak District many of the independent high street butc...
Back from market - unloading our new beef calves To market, to market, but we didn' buy a fat pig! This time we bought 19 young calves to booster the beef herd. Having gone out of milk production we are now trying to build up the numbers of our beef cattle so that we can graze the hillsides in a less intensive way. Animals, Cows, Derbyshire, Family, Farm, Lambs, Peak District, Snow, Tourism,Spring is definitely in the air in the Derbyshire Peak District, despite the sudden return of harsh winter weather on Wednesday when we woke up to over a foot of snow, with drifts blocking the road. Guests who have stayed at Hoe Grange over the last 2 years have more than likely seen if not met our sons small flock of sheep, Tia, ...
Oreo our Belted Galloway cow, has had a beautiful bull calf. Oreo has the characteristic white belt around her middle which gives the name to this native breed, but isn't a certified pedigree as she has a large black round spot on one side of her white flank. However her new baby has excellent markings with a proper full white belt - he is very handsome, shame he's not a heifer! Baby Beltie Meanwhile Shepherd Elliot has been tending to his older sheep, Tia and Maria and Coco and Chanel, giving them an injection of copper in preparation fo...
Our resident watercolour artist Roger Allen, renowned for his landscape paintings of the Peak District, has just completed a second picture of our son Elliot. If you remember the first painting “The boy with the broken arm”, featured Elliot standing in front of a small copse in winter, looking rather dejected with his arm in a sling. There are patches of snow on the ground and a dead sheep in the background, complete with circling crows! The new painting “Six months later” is a complete contrast, with a cheerful Elliot stood in fro...
