World Environment Day is a global event celebrated annually on June 5th. Led by the United Nations, World Environment Day is dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues and encouraging positive action.
World Environment Day 2023
This year, the theme is centered around finding solutions to the pervasive problem of plastic pollution, aiming to inspire individuals and communities to take actual steps towards a sustainable future.
As an eco-friendly holiday accommodation provider in the stunning Peak District, we understand the importance of minimizing our impact on the environment and are committed to sharing actionable tips for everyone to contribute to the fight against plastic pollution.
Understanding the Plastic Pollution Crisis:
Plastic pollution poses a severe threat to our planet, impacting our health, economy, and ecosystems. Single-use plastics, such as bags, bottles, and straws, accumulate in landfills, pollute oceans, and harm wildlife.
What we often don’t realise is that tiny plastic particles make their way into our food chain, posing risks to our health. Micro plastic particles are so small we don't see the problem, but it's crucial that we address this issue urgently and collectively.
Did you know that plastic takes 450 years to decompose? From 1950 to 2017, an estimated 902 billion tons of plastic was produced and the frightening thing is that 7 billion tons of this has become waste. Sadly less than 10% of plastic used around the world is recycled. 12 million tons of plastic are poured into the ocean every year!
Simple Steps to Take Action:
- Refuse Single-Use Plastics: One of the most effective ways to prevent plastic pollution is to avoid using single-use plastics. Instead choose reusable alternatives like cloth bags, water bottles, and utensils, or reuse plastic bags you already have instead of picking up new ones. Refuse plastic freebies, you don't need them! Don't buy bottled water, use a refillable aluminium bottle. By making small switches like this, you can significantly reduce your plastic footprint.

- Recycle Properly: Recycling is essential, but it's equally crucial to recycle correctly. Learn about your local recycling guidelines and ensure you separate recyclable materials from other waste. Encourage others to do the same to promote a recycling culture in your community.
- Support Eco-Friendly Products: Look for products that are made from sustainable materials and packaging. Support companies that prioritize eco-friendly practices and use biodegradable or compostable materials instead of plastics. Our welcome pack is plastic free with Peak District Dairy milk in glass bottles, and butter wrapped in paper, ground coffee from Peak Bean in eco packaging, home baked bread in paper bags and our delicious oatie biscuits presented under a glass dome, so no need for clingfilm! We also buy in bulk where possible which reduces packaging.

- Participate in Clean-up Initiatives: Join local clean-up initiatives and volunteer for neighbourhood clean-ups or conservation projects. By actively participating in these events, you can directly contribute to reducing plastic pollution in your area and inspire others to do the same. Why not join the volunteers at the Peak Park or take part in Volunteers Week ?
- Spread Awareness: Make use of the power of social media and personal networks to spread awareness about plastic pollution. Share informative posts, articles, and statistics, using the #BeatPlasticPollution hashtag to amplify the message. Once we have the facts about a problem we are more inclined to act on solutions. Encourage others to take action and make sustainable choices.
On this World Environment Day, let's remember that our collective actions, no matter how small, can create a significant impact on combating plastic pollution. By refusing single-use plastics, recycling correctly, supporting eco-friendly products, participating in clean-up initiatives, and spreading awareness, we can all contribute to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable planet.
Let's embrace these simple steps in our daily lives and inspire others to do the same. Let us know what actions you are taking. Together, we can beat plastic pollution and create a greener future for generations to come.
