Did you see the amazing programme on BBC1 this week?
Save energy and use your bike!
A Bang Goes the Theory Energy Experiment where they attempted to produce enough electricity for a family of four solely through the human pedal power of 50 cyclists. It really brought home how much electricity we use and abuse without even thinking about it.
Amazingly just boiling the kettle was a huge drain on the cyclists and when the father had a shower all 50 cyclists were needed to cycle at full pelt to provide enough power! Later on the family went out, but 3 cyclists were still needed purely to provide the electricity for the appliances they had left on standby and the lights they had left on in the house. Then incredibly the show host cooked a whole chicken in 90 minutes using the wasted energy from just 2 traditional light bulbs – if you haven’t already switched to new energy saving light bulbs you should now!
The programme really made you think about the amount of energy you use in a simple but effective visual way – even our 11 year old Elliot now thinks about turning off the lights. The programme was a brilliant demonstration of how we can all do our little bit to save energy, each small step can have an impact and cut our consumption considerably; simply boiling only the amount of water you need in the kettle (this could save up to 66% energy), not reboiling the kettle 2 minutes later, turning off appliances, not leaving them on standby when you go out, taking a minute or two less in the shower, washing clothes at 30o and drying them outside on the line, low energy light bulbs and many more small measures, all of which we try to do here at Hoe Grange, see our Eco policy for handy hints and tips. It's not hard to be green, it just needs a little thought!
We also try to buy local and help conserve our special Peak District environment, see Peak District Environmental Quality Mark website for details of other EQM businesses you can support whilst staying on holiday at Hoe Grange.
