The cosy home of Mr. and Mrs. Beaver
As the days get colder and the nights draw in, there's still plenty to do in Derbyshire. There is a large range of festive events over December, including the famous Christmas decorations at Chatsworth, which are well worth a visit.
We headed over to check them out and we can definitely say that this year, the decorations are more spectacular than ever before! The theme is C.S. Lewis' 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' and families are taken on a magical journey through the house, encountering all the characters of this beloved tale.
Stepping through the wardrobe, adults and children alike can explore the wonderful world of Narnia. You can peep through the window into the house of Mr. and Mrs. Beaver, meet Mr. Tumnus, hide from the White Witch and help save Aslan. There is the chance to dress up, to hitch a ride in a sleigh and even to sit on the thrones of the Pevensie children in the Sculpture Gallery. The house is transformed into a snowbound world just waiting to be discovered.
The White Witch in the Painted Hall
Narnia is not the only new world to be explored at Chatsworth. For families, there is the Children's Farmyard, where kids can get up close and personal with farm animals from the estate. The gardens are also magnificent, even in the winter, with modern art sculptures hiding round every corner. For period drama enthusiasts, there is also the chance to see the famous outdoor staircase at Pemberley, as Chatsworth featured in the 2007 version of Pride and Prejudice.
There are a number of restaurants and cafes on the estate and several cosy pubs in the surrounding villages, so a trip to Chatsworth is a great day out! Only a 20 minute drive from Hoe Grange, visiting the house in December is the perfect way to kick off the festive season.
Chatsworth House is open to the public from now until 23rd December. For more things to do around Hoe Grange over the Christmas period, check out our Local Events page.
