David rendering or is he making this weeks Oatie biscuits? Too windy and wet for riding here in the Peak District today, but there's always an up side! David set to this morning and started rendering the internal walls of the stables. Being an old stone building there were huge cracks and crevices in the walls which made them difficult to clean properly inbetween horse guests. When finished they should be easier to pressure wash thoroughly, keep clean and thus save time. David can now hardly move his arms, but at least it saves going to th...
Belted Galloways arrive at Hoe Grange Those who follow the blog will know of Ruby, the red and white calf sold at our farm sale. We hear that she is doing well, and is being halter trained. As she was a dairy cow rather than a beef breed, I promised Felicity when she was sold that I would get a more suitable replacement- in fact two of them. We have taken delivery two Belted Galloway heifers that were reared by my cousin and her husband Robert and Jennifer Adams. They are about 18 months old and not ready for breeding until next year. They...
Animals do the naughtiest things! Those guests who have stayed with us will know Robbie the cheeky 12 hand Welsh Mountain pony. Well guess where I found him this morning? Grazing contentedly on the grass outside the cabins - the mystery of it all is how he got out of the paddock leaving the other two horses behind and apparently locking the gate behind him ?? He has always been a bit of an escape artist, but this was more like Hudini! However that was not the naughty bit - once out he decided to raid the rubbish bin and was spotted by guest...
We are delighted to announce that we received the Bronze Award for best self-catering holiday in the East Midlands at the Enjoy England Excellence Awards this week. It is an amazing achievment to be in the top 3 in the region for the third year running and we would like to thank all our guests for their valuable feedback that has enabled us to improve our service and maintain such high standards. We are so proud to have reached such heights in such a short space of time having only opened for business in 2006, and promise that our next log cab...
We're off to the Oscars next Thursday! OK, it's not quite the real Oscars, but it's as close as we'll ever get ... We are absolutely delighted that we've been short listed for the East Midlands Tourism Enjoy England Excellence Awards for the third successive year - amazing and worth all the dreadful form filling! The award ceremony, a very posh do - black tie and a fab new frock (not yet purchased!) - takes place at Leicester's Athena Conference Centre next Thursday 8th October. We are really looking forward to a great night out. Whether ...
The Peak District is steeped in history and as I found out the other evening some of the tales concern ghostly goings on! It was a beautiful sunny evening as we arrived in the quaint market town of Bakewell for a ghost walk led by local historian Nicky Crewe. Although I have visited Bakewell many times, as it is one of the largest local farmer's markets where we often send our animals , I discovered back street alleyways and courtyards that I was totally unware of, and of course what made it all the more fascinating was the many ghost...
