The work continued this morning on Daisybank our new self catering log cabin. As the school was closed today for Shrovetide (more about that later) and our elder son was off college we had a family fun day laying 220 square meters of turf to landscape the garden area - so much quicker than sowing seeds!
The levels have been raised to match the new ramp and make easy access to the lawn for wheelchairs and those who prefer a level approach.
Even the boss had to get down and dirty, trimming the ends of the turf rolls where they met the path way and making sure we did the job to her high standards.
Quality control from the boss
With so many hands to help we were soon finished, just turn on the sprinklers and let nature take its course.
We decided that we had earned a few hours off, so a quick wash and change and down to Ashbourne to watch the bizarre Shrovetide football game, a fine old Derbyshire custom.
With several thousand people on each team, the goals in the river 3 miles apart, and very few rules, i.e . No murder or manslaughter, no going in the churchyard and no cars!!! the ball is pushed and shoved in a large hug all around the town streets, until someone manages to break away with it to make a dash for the goal.
Teams are decided by which side of the river you come from - up'ards or down'ards. As to where the ball is in our photo below is anyones guess - when the hug is so tight you don't see much of the ball, just an odd glimpse as it flips through the air before landing back in the crowd.
Football with a difference
The game is a much loved tradition in the town, which continues to defy all the 'health and safety gone mad' rules, which are slowly putting a stop to such fine old traditions. Long may Shrovetide continue!
