Powered by wind!
Our continuing efforts to minimise our carbon footprint and reduce reliance on fossil fuels has come to fruition with planning permission for a small 12 metre wind turbine being granted in full. You either love them or hate them - a bit like Marmite, but hopefully we can show our guests that small wind turbines can make a valid contribution to sustainable living.
Wind turbines convert kinetic energy into mechanical energy producing electricity, and are the greenest technology as they produce no carbon dioxide or other pollutants, except for the initial manufacture.
Whilst the approved site isn't entirely the ideal position for maximum wind production, we were able to work with the planning department to find a viable position that satisfies both planning policy and turbine efficiency.
Wind power has been so popular of late that there is a four month waiting list, so our turbine won't be in full swing until later in the year - watch this space!
Meanwhile we are delighted to report that our photovoltaic solar panels are performing better than predicted. The stunning Spring sunshine we had last Sunday saw the panels working at 90% capacity and generating 23.4 kwh of electricity in one day. This bodes well for the long daylight hours of summer.
Using both these renewable technologies will generate enough electricity to satisfy about 80% of our total requirements for both the farm and the self catering holiday businesses. As farmers, making the most of our land and the natural resources around us is in the blood. Using renewable energy is a going one step further to reducing our carbon footprint and minimizing the impact on our beautiful Peak District environment.
If anyone needs information or help with renewable energy please don't hesitate to contact us; whilst not experts we can share practical advice - David is full of wind!
