Our horses Oliver, Jessie and Robbie have all had a manicure and new shoes today. They have to have a new set of shoes every 6 to 8 weeks which cost nearly as much as mine!
Oliver having his 'dinner plates' filed down by the farrier!
There is a real art to being a good Farrier -
Not only do they have to be skilled with the hammer to work and shape the metal shoes to the correct size for each hoof, but they also need an excellent knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the horse, so that they can trim the feet correctly enabling the horse to move freely and with a straight gait. A good Farrier can make all the difference to a horses' performance. Without a good set of feet a horse is worthless.
Our Farrier ' hot shoes' so that the metal shoe fits snug to the horses' hoof. The Farrier also has to be strong, tough and have a way with animals, even when they test your patience, like our cheeky little pony Robbie, who tries to bite his bottom!
We are lucky to have Rob Lewis who is an excellent Farrier, and who will help out if a guest's horse looses a shoe whilst staying here on holiday. This together with the assurance that our vet will also visit in an emergency means you can be confident and book your horse holiday in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District knowing that your four legged friend will be well looked after.
