We have had several new arrivals at Hoe Grange Farm this week. Tagging our new calf Firstly an Aberdeen Angus heifer (female) calf was born and even at 6 hours old it took two of us to catch her to tag her ears. It never ceases to amaze me how agile and active calves can be; at less than 12 hours old the calf raced around the entire 4 acre field at high speed, and guests who have stayed in our log cabins will know how steep the hill is! Eventually we managed to corner her at the top of the field inbetween the wall and a fallen tree. Secondly...
Beautiful dragonfly takes a rest Hoe Grange plays host to the most amazing and diverse wildlife, from Great Crested Newts splashing in the dew ponds to Little Owls swooping over the meadows. The latest flying beast to arrive is this beautiful dragonfly which appeared in our conservatory this afternoon to take advantage of the September sunshine. After I had finished mowing the meadows the grass needed to wilt before Geof and his son came with their huge tractors and specialist equipment, including round baling machine and wrapper. The baler picks up the grass from the fields and forms the large compact round bales, which are dropped off all over the meadows. Animals, Derbyshire, Farm, Harvest, Peak District, self catering holiday, Tractor,Man and machine in harmony! Every week throughout the summer there are lots of lawns to mow here at Hoe Grange, as all of our self catering log cabins have their own garden area. David spends several hours mowing on a Friday, but this week swopped his usual little lawn mower for something slightly bigger as "one man went to mow, went to mow a meadow"!
