Birthday, anniversary or just because? Make your stay extra special

Some occasions deserve more than a card and a bunch of balloons.
A birthday, anniversary, family get-together or long-overdue weekend with friends is the perfect excuse for a few days away in the Peak District. At Hoe Grange, you can keep things relaxed while still adding a few thoughtful touches that make the stay feel extra special.
From birthday banners and cake to fresh flowers, spa treatments, pizza evenings and local beer, there are plenty of ways to turn a countryside break into a proper celebration.
If you’re planning something special, tell us when you book. We’re always happy to help with a few ideas.
Start your celebration with a few thoughtful touches
There’s something lovely about arriving and finding a surprise waiting for you.
We can help with birthday banners and balloons, or arrange flowers from local florist Angel Blooms, so the person you’re celebrating gets that “oh, you thought of everything” feeling as soon as they walk through the door.
You could add their favourite drink, bring a cake or pack a card to open once everyone has settled in.
It doesn’t need to be elaborate. A couple of personal touches can be enough to make the whole stay feel like an occasion.
Forget the restaurant booking and make an evening of it
One of our favourite celebration ideas is a pizza oven evening.
Making your own pizzas turns dinner into part of the fun. Everyone can choose their toppings, get involved and sit down together afterwards without worrying about restaurant bookings or who has to drive.
Add a beer delivery from local Aldwark Ales and you’ve got the makings of a very easy Peak District evening.
Then, as the evening cools, gather round the firepit, toast marshmallows and watch the flames while the stars begin to appear overhead.
For families, pizza making and marshmallow toasting can be the evening entertainment. For groups of friends or couples, it’s a lovely excuse to stay outside a little longer with a drink and a good catch-up.
Good food, local beer, a glowing firepit and nowhere else you need to be. Hard to beat, really.
Give them an adventure instead of another thing

If the person you’re celebrating doesn’t need another present, give them an experience instead.
A special occasion stay is the perfect excuse to try something new together. You could book a guided walk and explore the Peak District with someone who knows the area, or plan a cycling adventure. Choose something gentle with plenty of time for views and pub stops, or make a milestone birthday a little more energetic.
Animal lovers could get closer to some rather more exotic residents with a polar bear, penguin or meerkat experience at Peak Wildlife Park, where a range of behind-the-scenes animal experiences are available.
If wheels are more their thing, how about taking the controls of a steam or diesel locomotive with a Peak Rail driver experience? Or head to Drive Dad’s Car at the Great British Car Journey for a classic-car driving experience. Younger drivers can get in on the action too, with a Mini Land Rover Adventure designed for children aged 4 to 11.
For someone who prefers getting creative, there are plenty of options too. You could paint your own piece of pottery at Buxton Pottery Painting, or time your stay with one of the creative workshops at Thornbridge Hall, where the programme includes activities such as lino printing, pastel drawing and flower arranging.
Horse lovers can bring their own horse to Hoe Grange, with route maps and guided rides available.
One of our favourite rides? A trip to the local pub, where there’s even a hitching rail and buckets of water for the horses!
The best thing about giving an experience is that it becomes part of the story of the weekend.
“Remember when we did that? It was so much fun.”
That will last much longer than another pair of socks!
Capture the memories while you’re here

A special occasion is also a lovely opportunity to get some proper photographs together.
Most of us have hundreds of pictures and selfies on our phones, but far fewer where everyone is actually in the shot. Booking a photoshoot during your stay means you can enjoy the Peak District countryside as your backdrop and come away with something meaningful to keep.
We’ve worked with Ruth Downing of Rural Pictures in the past. Based near Ashbourne, Ruth specialises in rural photography and offers private commissions, and event photography.
You could also book a shoot with Wesley Chambers, also known as People of The Peak, who captures stunning portraits or if your horse or dog deserves to be centre stage, arrange a specialist pet photoshoot with Imogen Moon. She has taken some fabulous shots of me and my horse Rocco.
It’s a lovely idea for a milestone birthday, anniversary, family get-together or horse holiday, and you’ll go home with photographs that bring back memories of your stay for years to come.
Make time for a little pampering

Not every celebration needs a packed itinerary. Sometimes relaxation and mindfulness is the order of the day and our self-catering log cabins and glamping pods provide the perfect space.
You can book an on-site spa treatment from The Wellness Brand and enjoy some proper relaxation without having to go anywhere afterwards.
Depending on the accommodation you choose, you could also add a log-fired hot tub or Swedish barrel sauna experience. Daisybank and Pinder cabins have their own hot tubs, while glamping guests can add a log-fired hot tub to their stay.
After a day walking or cycling, coming back to a warm cabin or cosy pod, changing into something comfortable and putting your feet up can feel like a treat in itself.
And if the sky is clear, finish the evening with a bit of stargazing.
Bring your favourite people together

A big birthday is a good excuse to gather the whole gang.
Our four log cabins can sleep up to 18 guests between them, making Hoe Grange a comfortable base for family get-togethers and groups of friends.
Cook together, head out exploring, meet back for pizza or simply settle in for a good catch-up. Children can enjoy meeting the farm animals while the grown-ups get some time to relax too. With wide open space to fly your kites, scenic spots to share a picnic and rocks to scramble over you'll have the best time!
It’s not about organising a huge party. It’s about having the space to enjoy being together.
Sometimes two is the perfect party
Not every celebration needs a crowd.
For an anniversary, engagement or birthday for two, our glamping pods offer a cosy escape with ensuite shower rooms, kitchenettes and countryside views.
Skylark’s outdoor bath with running hot water adds an extra treat, or you could book a spa treatment, relax around the firepit or simply pour a drink and watch the sun go down.
Rosehip, our vintage gypsy caravan, is another romantic option from April to October if you fancy something a little different.
Small ideas that make a big difference

You don’t have to book lots of extras to make special occasion stays memorable. Sometimes the simplest surprises work best:
- Bring their favourite breakfast for a slow birthday morning.
- Pack up a picnic and find a scenic spot.
- Hide a card or present for them to find.
- Plan a surprise itinerary and reveal one activity at a time.
- Put the phones away, get the games out and enjoy an evening together.
- Head outside after dark to enjoy our dark skies. Budding astronomers can even bring a telescope.
For children, you could organise a simple birthday treasure hunt around your cabin or on our little play area.
Often, it’s these relaxed moments that people talk about afterwards.
You don’t actually need an excuse
Of course, celebrations don’t have to involve a birthday cake.
Maybe someone has started a new job, retired, graduated or finished a big project.
Perhaps your group of friends has finally managed to find one free weekend that works for everyone.
Or maybe you’ve simply decided it’s been far too long since you spent some proper time together.
And yes, we know some four-legged family members have birthdays which are taken very seriously.
Our log cabins and glamping pods welcome dogs, complete with a doggy welcome pack, so they needn’t miss out either.
We’ll leave the dog birthday cake to you.
Planning a surprise? Give us a clue
If you’re celebrating something at Hoe Grange, let us know when you book. We're happy to help you make the most of your stay.
Whether you’d like help arranging a surprise for someone you love or simply want a few ideas for making your stay feel different from an ordinary weekend away, just ask. We know the local area and are always happy to help you plan something that suits you.
Then leave a little space in the diary and enjoy the rest as it comes.
Before long there’ll be walking boots by the door, pizzas cooking, perhaps a glass of something local in hand, and everyone settling in for the evening.
That sounds like a pretty good celebration to us.
Felicity
