What makes a Christmas market accessible?

Let’s be honest: "accessible" is a broad word, and often used too loosely. Every individual has different needs, so we’ve focussed on providing the information you need to decide what works for you.
Whether you’re looking for somewhere that’s wheelchair accessible, easy to navigate if you or your child have sensory needs, or somewhere with great facilities for your assistance dog, we’ve done the research for you.

Makers Street Christmas Market at The Children’s Country House, Sudbury
21 – 23 November
25 minutes from Hoe Grange
Run by the National Trust and brand new for 2025, this gentle, family-friendly market offers a quieter festive experience - perfect for wheelchair users and guests who prefer less hustle.
While there’s plenty of general accessibility information online about the site, we’ve spoken to the team to understand where the market will be and what that means for access.
Accessibility highlights:

- The stalls are at the front of the hall and in the stableyard, all on firm surfaces suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There is a small area of cobblestones at the gate into the stableyard, and a small ramp into the ice cream parlour where a few inside stalls can be found.
- Parking is a short walk away, but there is a shuttle buggy that runs between the parking and the hall.
- There are accessible toilets and a Changing Places bathroom in the stableyard, though you’ll need a RADAR key to access it. You can borrow one from Visitor Services if needed.
- There’s a sensory room next to the Changing Places bathroom, with items such as spinners, ear defenders and much more, which can also act as a quiet space.
- Assistance dogs are very welcome.
For more information on accessibility at the site in general, see the National Trust website.
Top tip: This is a brilliant choice for families with autistic children or anyone who benefits from a quieter setting.
