If you love cheese then you'll love our next local delicacy on our Derbyshire food trail, lovingly created by the very passionate chef and pub owner, Matteo Frau.
Matteo moved to The Red Lion at Birchover (just a few miles from Hoe Grange) in 2006. The pub has become renown for real ale and food as Matteo has lovingly combined fresh locally sourced ingredients from our beautiful Peak District, with the influences and recipes from his Sardinian homeland. The fabulous Sardinian evenings are a veritable feast with at least four courses.
Matteo took 6 years to perfect the recipe for his delicious Birchover Blue cheese, trying out subtle variations on the customers at the pub, before reaching the perfect taste. It is one of the tastiest cheeses I've ever had and quite rightly deserves the taste awards it has achieved. You can tell this cheese has been created with passion.
Matteo began making cheese at the age of four, helping his granddad in Sardinia, where cheese making is part of everyday life, alongside producing homemade wine, beer, olive oil and bread, with recipes passed down from one generation to the next.
Matteo is now creating a new Pecorino-style cheese, which is made from Derbyshire cows milk, often from local dairy Matlock Meadows, rather than using sheep milk as in the traditional Italian version. It sounds delicious and I can't wait to try it.
Because so little of the cheese is made if you want to sample this artisan Derbyshire delight you'll have to visit The Red Lion pub and meet the man himself, or visit one of the other local places that serve his award winning cheeses: Fischers at Baslow, who offer a superb £20.15 lunch on weekdays, The Peacock at Rowsley, East Lodge at Rowsley, who also serve an amazing cream tea, The Red Lion at Stonedge, Owen Taylor at Leabrooks or The Bakewell Deli.
Never one to sit back Matteo is now about to open a micro brewery at the pub using water from its ancient well and only English hops and malt. The first brew should be ready shortly.
