Browse through our blog posts to find out what life is like at Hoe Grange Holidays along with some great ideas for days out in the Peak District.
It’s our mission to uncover the delights of the Peak District so you can make the most of your holiday at Hoe Grange! One of our real gems is Fischer's at Baslow Hall, which is the only Michelin starred restaurant in Derbyshire.
Fischer's first achieved its Michelin star status over 25 years ago and is the perfect setting for a celebration or that extra special occasion. The hall itself is magnificent as you sweep up the tree lined drive. Although the majestic hall appears to be a 17th century manor with mullioned windows, leaded panes of glass and gabled wings, it was in fact built in 1907. It is an amazing setting and as well as the restaurant there are stunning stately rooms so you can stay over.
We recently celebrated our wedding anniversary by popping along to enjoy the "Lunch for Less" menu. With a warm welcome, superb customer service, lovingly prepared and beautifully presented dishes, it was an amazing gourmet experience. The food wasn’t just a feast for the eyes, it tasted delicious too!
The atmosphere in the restaurant is tranquil and relaxing with everything in perfect order, from the crisp white linen and gleaming glass wear on the table, to the roaring log fire in the snug.
Fischer's is a family run business like ours and you can really tell they care about everything they do. The whole ethos is one of sustainability with the menus based on seasonal produce grown in the kitchen garden or locally sourced. They have taken their Covid safety responsibilities seriously and practice social distancing with care.
Fischer's take a classic approach to creative modern British cuisine, crafting a unique fine dining experience like no other. You can instantly tell that quality is the key priority.
Everything grown in the kitchen garden is organic, from beetroot, onions, peas, beans, radish, raspberries wild strawberries to tomatoes and herbs. Freshly picked and transformed into a refined feast on your plate within hours.
As each crop comes into season the skilled chefs plan the next culinary delights. You never know what appetizing delicacies will be set before you.
Founder Max Fischer is not purely a chef, but also a keen gardener and is as happy outside in the 5 acres of grounds as he is the kitchen. When he and his wife Susan first moved to Fischer’s Hall the garden was overgrown and run down. Over the last 30 years he has created a stunning vista with verdant lawns surrounded by cottage garden borders filled with sweet-scented flowers. There is an Arboretum planted with specimen trees and of course the classical kitchen garden.
It was a joy to be able to wander through the garden in the autumn sunshine after our luncheon. A perfect way to spend the afternoon, discovering hidden paths and secluded corners, and spotting what produce was growing in the raised beds in the kitchen garden.
A gourmet delight needn't break the bank if you go for the “lunch for less” menu on Wednesdays and Thursdays like we did. However there are other fantastic options to choose from, such as the 9 course tasting menu, with carefully paired wines. Or if you love Masterchef, you'll love taking a seat at the kitchen bench; it's an inspiring experience where you will see the chefs cooking and creating your dinner right in front of your eyes.
Fischer’s are rightly proud of their Michelin star rating and have won many awards for their gastronomic delights. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and have happy memories of our anniversary celebrations. Every mouthful was bursting with flavour to savour.
With their #LoveLocal ethos in line with our own we highly recommend you try out the best fine dining experience in the Peak District.
