solid as a rock! The weather has picked up and we were fortunate to have some brilliant Spring sunshine todayย as weย laid the concrete for the foundations of our new Rainster log cabin.ย The first mix was a little on the "stoggey" side which made it difficult to work with, but the second delivery wasย a much better consistency and after an afternoon of wheelbarrowing (saves David going to the gym) we had the basic levels ready for the next stage, the block work . The photo doesn't really showย the slope of the site - it's not easy building on ...

Felicity and I are delighted to announce that we have been successful in our bid for RDPE grant funding from European Union (EU) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), for the expansion of our self catering businessย  - fantastic news! - we are now able to build two further log cabins with excellent disabled facilities. The Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE), with environmental stewardship at its heart, aims to safeguard and enhance the rural environment, improve the competitiveness of the agricultural s...

Can you imagine leaping into an icy river on a cold winter's day? It seems strange but thatย is exactly whatย a hardcore ofย young men in Ashbourne have been doing today! If only I could get my hands on the Ball! There are many strange traditions in the Peak District and Derbyshire, but perhaps one of the most unusual is the Royal Shrovetide Football played through the streets of Ashbourne on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. The game was first recorded as long ago as 1682; by 1928 it had become so respectable that the then Prince of Wales wa...

Star quality! Sevilla the stallion David and I are eagerly awaiting the release of the film, The Wolfman tomorrow; not because we are avid horror movie fans, but because we stabledย Steve Dent'sย stunt and film horses at Hoe Grange Holidays during filming.ย We got to know Sevilla theย stunning grey stallion, loved by all the leading ladies, and Jimi and Hendrix, the pair of carriage driving horses, and their 13 friends. The location for filming was Chatsworth House, just 14 miles away, not that you will recognise this magniciant building as it ...

Animal Rescue

January 30, 2010
Animals, Farm, General,

This week here at Hoe Grange we've had our own animal rescue to rival that of the TV series. One of our young bullocks (think teenage boy cow!)ย escaped out of the shed by squashing under the feed barrier and barging through two gates. By some quirk of fate the small gate to the muck hole, which is usually carefully closed,ย must have been open. The poor animal was almost completely immersed in thick muck with just his head above the slimy mess. It was pure chance that David drove past on the tractor and from his high vantage point could just ...

2 foot Freddie - a shadow of his former self! Holiday guests often find it so comfortable and relaxing at Hoe Grange that they don't want to go home - they want to linger and make the most of the fabulous Peak District scenery! Certainly Freddie the snowman seems extremely reluctant to leave. He has been with us since New Year's Day and whilst he started off at 8 foot tall and isย now reduced down to just 2 foot,ย he still seems determined not to melt away entirely - he must have heardย about our great January holiday offers! However I am sure...
