Can you believe it’s raining yet again? Is this really August?  Just been to shut the hens up and guess what  - it’s drizzling again. What do you do when the summer weather is so wet and miserable? Fortunately the Peak District provides many wet weather options including a wealth of underground caves and disused mines, such as the amazing Poole’s Cavern and the unique Blue John mines at Castleton. So guess what David and I did this week to avoid the wet? We went Extreme Dining in an old lead mine with our Round Table and Circle friends...

Did you know that this week is National Parks Week? Hoe Grange Holidays is ideally situated on the edge of the fabulous Peak District National Park created 60 years ago when the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act was passed; its aim to ensure our best landscapes and its features were protected, providing generations with access to the great outdoors. As well as stunning views, National Parks are also habitats for diverse wildlife species, impressive geology and often hold special scientific interest. National Parks Week To mark ...

Rubbish or treasure? Everything seems extremely quiet at Hoe Grange after the hectic build up to our dairy sale - it really is quite strange -  I have even made it to school sports day for the first time! The majority of sale items have now been picked up; the last few heifers have left in cattle trailers today, the tractor and feeder wagon have been taken off on low loaders, the milking equipment in the dairy is being dismantled and the scrap lorry has fetched away the large pile of what I considered to be rubbish - but as they say one m...

Dairy Herd Sale

July 21, 2009
Farm, General,

Our farm sale last Friday was a day of mixed emotions. Very sad and tearful at times as we watched 30 years of hard work sold of bit by bit, however we could not help but smile as things that we considered as scrap sold for £10 here, £50 there, or even over £100! Have you ever been to a live auction? It can certainly get the adrenalin going and people can't help getting carried away bidding over their original limit! Going, going, gone... I felt no regret as bits of soulless machinery and tractors were auctioned one after the other; the hea...

Cow wash

July 16, 2009
Farm, General,

Well you will have heard of a car wash, but have you ever herd of a cow wash ? Shampoo and set for cows at Hoe Grange Power shower! In preparation for our farm sale tomorrow all our cows had a shampoo and set today - well I say shampoo and set, but really it was more of a pressure wash! I thought the cows would be terrified, but they really seemed to quite enjoy it - I suppose it must have been a bit like a power shower for us. The specialist team  arrived complete with equipement and managed to wash the entire milk herd in the space ...

Rosie with new calf Ruby It is a sad decision, but after much heart ache and angst we have decided to sell our Friesian dairy herd and go out of milking. Sadly Ruby is one of the last Friesian cows to be born at Hoe Grange. We shall of course continue farming, but we will be concentrating on rearing beef and perhaps some sheep, as Hoe Grange is too rocky to comercially grow crops. This has all come about due to a little publicised European directive to reduce the nitrate levels in ground water. Under these new regulations, known as NVZ (Nitro...
